Employee Retention Reality Check

Business is going well and you have a great team in place. As a business owner, you know that your employees are an extremely valuable resource for the stability and growth of your business. So what can you do to maintain and improve your employee retention? Intuit QuickBooks shares that a Gallup survey, revealed that an unreasonable workload and lack of management support are two main causes of employee burnout. Did you know this about burnout?:

  • almost two-thirds of all U.S. workers feel burnout on the job, with about a quarter of those feeling it “constantly”
  • burned out employees are more than 60% likely to take a sick day and are nearly three times more likely to be actively seeking another position
  • if a burned out employee does stay, that person will experience an approximate 13% drop in confidence levels as it relates to their job

For a business to grow, an important component is to increase productivity while managing costs. How do you do that without overburdening and stressing out your employees? Here are some tested methods that are mentioned:

  • share autonomy with your employees
  • work together to create performance metrics
  • measure employee productivity as a team and look at best practices and improvements where needed
  • create time and spaces for colleagues to collaborate and connect
  • reduce noise and distractions
  • introduce as much natural light into the workspace, as it has shown to increase employee productivity and decrease the presence of negative moods

If you want to think outside of the box:

  • take a look at lunchtime
  • consider a look at ‘free time’ in the work day
  • create a culture of inclusiveness
  • communicate communicate communicate
