Thinking about Freelancing?

Considering Freelancing

Freelancing is a job option that many people consider at a certain point in their careers.  Being your own boss, dictating your own hours, setting your own rates are all very tempting reasons to freelance.  “A recent study by Upwork indicates that most U.S. workers will be freelancers by 2027, and nearly half of millennial workers are currently freelancing.”

Are you really prepared to make this career change and is freelancing full time really for you?  Intuit QuickBooks shares some points to consider before you make this leap:

1.  Find your niche

  • Reflect on your accomplishments, parse out your strengths, and list your strongest skills
  • Ask for feedback from family and friends about your strengths and skills, using tools like  TruScore and Benchmarks
  • Assess the freelancer marketplace by checking places like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com

2.  Build a space for yourself

  • Create a quality portfolio
  • Establish a web presence using quality website builders like Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, and others.
  • Personal networking should be a priority task

3.  Establish a business, not a lifestyle

  • Research business resources
  • Develop a business plan

4.  Build a client list before you make the career change

  • While working at your full time position, start researching potential clients
  • Take on small jobs to test the market and your abilities

5.  Embrace the hustle

  • Start off slowly and trim all excess
  • Be efficient and automate business processes
  • Spend smart but be in touch with legal counsel to protect your business
