Why Startups Need a Business Lawyer

January 30, 2018 by OSYB Staff

You’re starting a new business – congratulations!  Startups require a lot of work and resources.  You may be doing most of the work on your own, or maybe you are one of the lucky ones who can hire staff or contractors.  Keep in mind though that you may need a business lawyer as there are some things that only a lawyer can do.  TechPluto shares a few areas where having a business lawyer is vital:

  1. Trademarks – protect your intellectual property by registering and trademarking
  2. Software licenses – protect software designed specifically for you from corporate theft by licensing the appropriate software
  3. Contract reviews – all your contracts should either be written or reviewed by your business lawyer
  4. Company formation – incorporating or forming an LLC should include your business lawyer and accountant to protect your best  interests
  5. Creating partnerships – if you do create a partnership, you should consult your lawyer to ensure that it is an equitable deal

Though lawyers’ fees can be quite an expense, it is best to take the pinch upfront and have your business standing on solid legal ground.
