New Phishing Scam Reeling in Tax Professionals

August 30, 2017 by OSYB Staff

New phishing scams are constantly evolving and you need to stay ahead of the game.  One of the latest scams includes a supposed upgrade from your software company.  The bait is that this is the time of year that legitimate software companies are upgrading their software programs in time for the October 15th deadline for those who filed for a tax extension.

So be aware and let all your employees know about this scam.  During this busy time, someone may inadvertently share information that they shouldn’t.  The scammers are using convincing templates from software companies and asking clients to upgrade their login credentials as they get the new updates.  When they have access to your account, they will be exploiting your client’s personal information.

Some things to be aware of:

  • software providers do not embed links into emails asking them to validate passwords
  • never open a link or attachment from unsolicited mail
  • make sure every staff person is educated on phishing
  • alert your software provider and other agencies so they can protect other tax professionals and capture the phishers
